Steve Carell's Michael Scott already said farewell to "The Office," and the actor isn't planning on doing it again.

The reason he didn't want to join in when the series comes to an end on May 16, Carell told CNN, is because it just didn't seem to be in character.

"I figured the character would go back and visit everybody, but he wouldn't do it on camera at this point," he said. "I think he had grown past the idea of being in the documentary, that was my take on it. That [Michael Scott] had said goodbye to that aspect of his life, that that's not what was important to him. I just thought, yeah he'd go back and visit, but he wouldn't want the camera crew to be documenting it."

Since Carell left the comedy, which has run for nine seasons on NBC, the actor has been primarily working on film projects and will next appear in the comedy "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone."

Carell stars as a magician (yes, named Burt Wonderstone) who's turned into "a bit of an egomaniac and a jerk" in the midst of his successful career, Carell said.

"He is a guy who found magic as a kid, and it sort of gave him a purpose," he explained of his character. "[He] becomes best friends with [Steve Buscemi's Anton Marvelton], who eventually is his magic partner. They become incredibly big Vegas successes, they're the toast of the town, but after years and years of doing it, they have soured. And that's kind of a fun thing to watch, someone who needs to find the love again - find his friendship, find the love of magic, find out what made him a decent person in the first place."

But while he's busy with movies - his next two projects include "Despicable Me 2" and "Anchorman: The Legend Continues" - he isn't totally done with TV.

"I'm pretty busy right now, which is great," he told CNN, "but I would never say never."
