LONGVIEW-According to Longview police, the man suspected of robbing several East Texas motels kills himself right before robbing another one.

Just after 10:30 p.m. Saturday night, a Longview police officer was filling up at a gas station next to the Ramada Inn on Spur 64 in Longivew when he spoted a red chevy pick up truck that looked just like the one police were looking for, police said.

"We're pretty confident at this stage, of course the investigation is still ongoing but were pretty confident at this stage that this is in fact the same individual we've been looking for in connection with all the motel robberies," Sgt. Shaun Pendleton said.

After the officer checked it out, he saw the man who matched the description of the alleged robber standing in front of the truck.

"It looks like he was in the process of preparing to rob this motel," Sgt. Pendleton said. "He had just put on a ball cap and he actually turned around and walked back toward the office when he saw the officer."

After the officer ordered him to stop and show his hands, police say the suspect pulled out a hand gun, ran between two cars and shot himself.

Police say the clothing the 29-year-old man was wearing matched exactly what they say the robbery suspect wore during some of the crimes.

If this is the man police are looking for, it would put an end to the string of armed robberies across the area.

The first robbery happened June 9th at the Best Western on East Loop 281 in Longview. On June 17th the suspect held it up again at gunpoint. The very next night, the Holiday Inn Express on Tuttle Circle in Tyler. Then, the Comfort Inn on Front Street and Ruby's Convenience Store. The latest robbery took place Saturday when he robbed the Comfort Inn and Suites on Reick Road in Tyler.

Last night the officer did not fire his weapon and was not injured in this incident nor were any guests of the hotel.

At this time police are only identifying the suspect as a 29-year-old white male.
