Jasper police chief fired as political turmoil continues

The first African-American police chief in the East Texas timber town of Jasper, whose 2011 appointment by a then-black majority City Council launched a political firestorm that ended in the recall of three black council members, has been fired.
In a racially divided, 4-1, vote, the white-majority council voted Monday to oust Rodney Pearson, who previously had been Jasper fire chief and a state highway trooper. Pearson's attorney Cade Bernsen denounced the move as "outrageous."
