School trustees on Tuesday selected their deputy superintendent to take temporary reins of the district as Superintendent Jody Clements moves to Longview ISD, where he will make less money.

Deputy Superintendent Dennis Williams said before the meeting that he intends to apply for the permanent position, which by law must be advertised.

“Kilgore is the place I’ve grown up,” Williams, a 1979 Kilgore High School graduate, said before the special meeting to accept Clements’ resignation after 4½ years as superintendent.

That was done unanimously, if a little reluctantly, by board members who also were unanimous in making Williams their interim superintendent.

“I see a lot of potential here in Kilgore,” Williams said. “My passion is to see all the kids be successful. I feel like we’ve started on the track to academic excellence, and I want to continue to push for academic success.”
