Terror in taxicabs
Drivers fearful; HPD sure the robbery-slayings are connected
Houston---Cab drivers are on edge after two of their own were robbed and shot to death in as many days by fares picked up from the same southwest Houston gas station after the business had closed for the night.
Houston Crime Stoppers and Yellow Cab announced a $15,000 reward Thursday for information leading to the arrests and convictions of the passengers who killed Mohammed Nabiil Elsayed, 32, of Houston, and Blaise Uzoma Nwokenaka, 50, of Bellaire, then dumped their taxicabs three blocks apart. Homicide investigators are looking for a pair of gunmen working together in both crimes.
Both victims, who were independent contractors for Yellow Cab, were robbed, meaning their killers can be prosecuted for capital murder. Homicide investigators say there's no doubt the two crimes are related.
"We're not a big believer in coincidence," said Houston Police Department homicide investigator Fil Waters. "You have similar requests being made for cabs to a similar area. At the end of the day you've got two dead cab drivers — and cabs that are dumped three blocks away from one another. I don't think it takes CSI Miami to figure out that they're probably connected."
