Census workers attacked
Is it more common than in 2000?
TYLER - Census jobs were at one time considered a welcomed opportunity in the tough economy.
Recently its become apparent being a census worker is dangerous.
Nearly 40 attacks against census workers have been counted so far this year.
The latest was in Nacogdoches. Police say a 79 year-old census worker was simply doing her job when two people jumped her and took her census bag.
The woman was injured, but not severely.
Census representatives say workers who go door to door are allowed to avoid homes that seem to pose dangers, but sometimes it's difficult to tell which places will be dangerous.
For example in central Texas an attorney is charged with shooting at a census worker.
Census officials say the number of attacks this year don't differ much from attacks in 2000.
