Lufkin Police issue weather warning and safety information
From Lufkin Police:
A National Weather Service Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6:00 PM Friday, February 04, 2011, for Angelina and Nacogdoches Counties.
A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of ice, snow, and sleet are possible, making travel very hazardous and disruption of power likely due to icing of trees and power lines.
Freezing rain, sleet, and snow is expected to develop over East Texas this evening and over night. The freezing rain is expected to continue into Friday morning before changing back over to snow Friday afternoon.
Temperatures are expected to be cold enough for precipitation to stick to roads, bridges, trees, and power lines. Accumulations of one-quarter to one-half-inch of ice and snow will be possible. Travel in such conditions is hazardous and not recommended; motorists choosing to travel are urged to use caution - drive slowly, watch well ahead of the vehicle, and avoid sudden stops and maneuvers.
A Red Cross shelter site is on stand-by. Residents of Angelina County who are without power and in need of shelter service may request assistance by contacting Lufkin Police Department at (936) 633-0356. The Red Cross shelter site will not be activated until requests for assistance are received and, once activated, those seeking shelter service must contact Lufkin Police Department at (936) 633-0356.
Texas Department of Transportation and City of Lufkin Street Department are monitoring the weather and road conditions, and will address issues as they arise.
