After close to three hours of showing, a slap on the hindquarters from the judge marked this year’s grand champion steer at the Angelina County Youth Fair on Thursday. The youth fair crowned a hosts of champions on Thursday, with Andrew Polk of the 4-H Horse Club showing the steer that brought home the night’s top prize.

“I feel pretty happy right now,” Polk said. “I’ve been trying to win grand champion for four years now. Being a senior, there’s no better way to go out, so I’m more than pleased.”

Polk’s steer showed the frame and finish for which the judge was looking, with a balanced structure and solid muscle tone.

“The main key is in the food — the nutrition and the overall value, the amount and the intake,” Polk said. “You have to have exercise and a lot of hands-on work, but the most important part is the food.”
