Attendance back up after gang rumors at Nacogdoches High School

Attendance at Nacogdoches High School returned to 95 percent on Monday, and the more than 540 students who stayed home on Friday following rumors of violence received excused absences, Superintendent Dr. Fred Hayes said.

“It’s going great,” NHS Principal Nathan Chaddick said. “(Monday) was a very normal day. Students are doing fine. Some parents had some concerns, and understandably, but it just looked like a normal day at a pretty large high school.

More than a week ago, at least 12 NHS students were sent to the district’s alternative education program for fighting. Soon thereafter, rumors surfaced that more fighting would follow, and students and parents feared guns would be brought onto campus.


But Doug Ploch, chief of the Nacogdoches Independent School District’s police department, said the high school was “kind of back on track.”
