Remember all the fuss over the power company’s smart meters?
Well, water utilities all over the state are doing the same thing, and you probably didn’t realize it.
We all know about water meters.
They are buried in the ground in front of your house, and used to be read by a guy who came by in person, lifted the lid, dodged the spiders and snakes and wrote down the numbers.
Now in Tyler, they drive by and read it electronically.
But now…utilities all over the state are installing smart meters that communicate directly with the utility.
And ultimately you’ll be able to go online and see your water use in real time.
And if you have a leak, you and the utility will know right away.
A smart meter would also help you determine leaky faucets or toilets before you send money down the drain.
According the Texas Tribune and the Water Development board, there are over 3 and a half million already installed, including here in Tyler, and unlike the smart electric meters, no real complaints.
In fact, learning what you use could be eye opening.
