Tyler TX (KETK) — The Humane Society of Texas is now Pets Fur People as of last Friday.
The shelter has been wanting to change since 2008.
The non-profit organization separated from the Humane Society by changing their name and changing their motto.
"If we can pair the proper people with the proper pets it's just a really wonderful experience for them and it can be life changing in some situations," said Gayle Helms, Pets Fur People Executive Director.
The animal shelter decided in 2008 to not kill any of their animals.
They are the only no kill shelter in all of East Texas.
They decided after 45 years as the Humane Society to rebrand themselves and become a selective admission shelter.
They got their goal in 2010,but this life changing decision is costing them a significant loss from their annual funding.
The shelter used to receive funding from the city, but they severed their contract in 2008.
The shelter now only accepts animals that people give up or a stray that is adoptable.
"We're not trying to turn our back on anyone but you go broke trying to be everything to everybody. It was just making it to where we couldn't keep our doors open,"said Helms.
Audrey Hill adopted Francis, a Pekingese today from the shelter.
Hill tells KETK all her dogs come from shelters, but Pets Fur People is her top choice.
"I've been to a lot of shelters and this one is so nice and clean. I don't know how they do it. There is no dog smell. It's amazing isn't it?" said Hill.
The shelter will not be open anymore unless the community helps out.
The only income the shelter is receiving is from fundraisers, adoptions and donations.
They want to give every animal the chance to find a safe and loving family and emphasizes the impact a pet can have in a person's life.
