We've had some beautiful weather here in East Texas lately and anglers are gearing up for Spring fishing tournaments. However, it might not be smooth sailing for everyone.

January is wrapping up, and Spring is just around the corner. Michael Krooks, tournament fisherman, said he has been fishing for nearly 40 years. In 2012, he won the angler of the year award. "Having the highest average overall throughout the year," said Krooks, But, TPWD warns it might not be the best fishing season.

Right now at Lake Tyler were told water levels are about 4ft. below average, which means if you're looking for fish you're going to need to head out a little farther to find some vegetation. Dan Bennett, Biologist at TPWD, said, "Due to some of these localized droughts and that sort of thing, it creates a little different style of fishing anglers have to adjust to not finding fish where thy typically found them in the past."

However, Krooks says he's not worried about the water levels. He's been getting up close and personal with the bass for decades. His wife even says before they tied the knot 20 years ago, she knew there was something a little fishy. "We got married December 31st 2009, 1999! The reason I picked that date was because it's to late to hunt and too early to fish," said Krooks.

The Media Bass fishing tournament will take place at the Villages on Lake Tyler on Saturday, February 2nd.
