TYLER - Paramedics strapped and loaded a young man to a stretcher after he was involved in a car crash on WSW Loop 323 in Tyler Friday.
Witnesses said it was lunchtime, traffic was backed up for miles and the young man got impatient.
"All the traffic was stopped," said Melinda Peterson, whom witnessed the accident, along with her children. "The next thing I know, the black vehicle passed on the shoulder...a car was turning into the Jalepeno Tree and they collided."
Peterson said despite the heavy traffic - she didn't notice any police officers manning traffic around the mall area.
Tyler Police Department spokesman Don Martin said officers never hand-directed traffic during the holidays.
He says, instead, TPD relies on traffic signals.
Longview Police Department public information officer Kevin Brownlee says they implemented a "Holiday Action Plan" right after the Thanksgiving.
He said officers are assigned to various beats and they are responsible for their particular area. Officer Brownlee the idea is to clear car accidents quickly, man shopping center parking lots for an suspicious activity and he says, if necessary, they'll get out and hand-direct traffic. However, Brownlee said for the most part, just like Tyler, they believe in the city's traffic system.
Tyler city officials estimate that 100,000 people live in the area. They said during the holidays, 400,000 people go there to shop.
Peter Eng, Tyler City Engineer, said traffic is monitored remotely. He said Friday afternoon, his team surveyed the Broadway Square Mall area and adjusted signals where needed.
Everyone we spoke with Friday said to remember that it's the holidays and it's going to be busy, therefore, remain calm and patient.
How do you feel about the traffic this time of the year wherever you live? What do you think needs to be done, if anything, to speed things along? We want to hear! Leave your thoughts in the comment box!

I know it had to be a man to come up with the median idea. Come on how is it any better. Without them you can get around so much better. You don't have to try to be a big city because your NOT!!!!!
Until the business model changes in Tyler, Broadway will always be a bottleneck. Expansion must happen both to the east and west of Broadway. This is very important. We just cannot keep going south with new businesses. Expansion is a must to the east and west. North expansion is remote insofar as business are concerned. Therefore the other must be promoted with both cultural and business emphasis. Not only business, but residential also. Incentives must be in place to encourage new housing in other directions. If housing occurs, then business will follow.
Rick,
I, too, lived in Los Angeles and hate to say it - but traffic here is just as bad. In LA, you have all the freeways and granted if you time it wrong you can sit in traffic for hours. But in Tyler, the freeway doesn't run through town, instead you must take the loop and during rush hour it's ridiculous. I'd much rather sit on the 10 freeway in LA than sit in Tyler, Texas and not move an inch for 30 minutes.
Building those medians was the most stupid idea of all. No one can turn into the business they want to go to without going two or three blocks down and then making a U-turn. I hate them. Do the businesses like them? I have changed my mind many times about going to certain stores because it is just too much trouble to make those turns. I'm very surprised that no serious accident hasn't happened over at the Carmike Cinema. Yesterday while trying to turn in at the mall. We waited in traffic to get from Jason's Deli to the turn in to the mall. The traffic light was green for about three seconds only allowing about two or three cars in. Just awful!
having experienced traffic in los angeles the best thing to do is be calm and allow extra time for activities. and no, i haven't seen traffic yet here in tyler.
