‘Life-threatening’ cold means more people at local shelters
Longview — Longview homeless shelters were packed Monday as people sought refuge from a cold blast of winter air that descended upon much of East Texas.
Eric Burger, executive director of Hiway 80 Rescue Mission, said the shelter has been in overflow for two weeks with the latest count at 210 people.
“That’s about 50 to 60 more people than usual,” he said.
Burger said Hiway 80 Rescue Mission’s Hope Haven Home for Women and Children has been in overflow for two years, and he expects it to be four or five months until an expansion makes more beds available.
