1 person killed by Border Patrol at traffic stop
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — (AP) - A U.S. Border Patrol agent has shot and killed a person during a traffic stop near the Texas coast.
The incident happened about noon Thursday near Mathis, about 25 miles northwest of Corpus Christi.
Border Patrol spokesman Henry Mendiola said Thursday the shooting involved a vehicle that was suspected of smuggling illegal immigrants.
San Patricio Sheriff Leroy Moody tells the Corpus Christi Caller-Times that the agent opened fire when the driver of the sport utility vehicle drove toward him, apparently to run him over. Moody says four to five suspected
illegal immigrants were found in the vehicle.
Mendiola said no agents or anyone else were injured.
The identity of the dead driver hasn't been released.
