Fifteen high school students from area school districts are learning about healthcare this week at the first Medical Scholars Academy hosted by UT Health Northeast.

The academy allows the students – who will be juniors or seniors next fall – with hands-on experience in a variety of healthcare fields. It began Sunday, June 9, and continues through Thursday, June 13.

From 9 a.m. to noon tomorrow, Wednesday, June 12, students will visit the GI lab, Biomedical Research Center, and pulmonary clinic at UT Health. From 2:50 p.m. to 4 p.m., they will learn CPR and visit UT Health’s Cancer Treatment and Prevention Center.

On Thursday morning, they will get to examine two sets of pig lungs – one healthy and one that shows the effects of smoking (from 9 to 10:30 a.m.) and then visit Rehabilitation Services at UT Health.

Students applied for the program and were accepted in April. In addition to letters of recommendation, they wrote essays describing why they wanted to learn about educational and career opportunities in healthcare.

Participating institutions besides UT Health Northeast are East Texas Medical Center, Trinity Mother Frances Hospital, The University of Texas at Tyler, and Tyler Junior College.

During the academy, the students stay overnight at the Ornelas Dormitory at UT Tyler. Sponsors of the academy are ComputerLand Network Technologies, Suddenlink Communications, UT Health Northeast, and the SUPERNet Consortium.

Students and UT Health Northeast faculty members will be available for interviews. For information, call Toni Moore at (903) 877-7079 or (903) 452-1963 (cell), or Dexter Jones (903) 877-5137 or (903) 521-8318 (cell).
