Two young lions and three gazelles are now calling Caldwell Zoo home.

The female lion, Nijeri, whose name means "daughter of a warrior," was born on July 25, 2011. She has been donated to Caldwell by Milwaukee County Zoo.

The male lion, Ayotunde, whose name means "joy has returned," was born on July 28, 2011. He has come from the Reid Park Zoo in Tucson.

Three gazelles have arrived from the St. Louis Zoo.

The gazelles, Hatari, Pockets and Rusty, are being introduced to the other stock on the African overlook. They are classified as vulnerable by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and are thought to be extinct in some parts of their African range.

In North America, there are only 12 males and 15 females in four institutions.
