There have been five fatal car accidents in Rusk County so far this year, down from 20 this time last year. Five fatalities so far this year is still higher than the national average, but the sheriff says he's relieved it appears drivers in his county are paying more attention to the road.

Sheriff Jeff Price says all kinds of different factors have played into the fatalities this year, including alcohol, inattention, slick roads and motorcyclists not wearing helmets.

Sheriff Price wants to remind drivers, this holiday weekend, law enforcement will be out in full force patrolling the roads and especially looking for drunk drivers and speeders.

Price says the equation for safe driving is really..simple.

"If you're gonna drive a a car..don't play on the phone..don't play with the attention to what you're doing..if there's inclement visibility..roadways are wet..anything to that nature..slow down.."
