50 students to take part in Early College High School
Nacogdoches, Tx (KETK) — Fifty Nacogdoches High School students will be inducted March 26 at Stephen F. Austin State University as the newest cohort for Early College High School.
In December, NISD received 108 applications for the program that allows students to earn college credit while attending high school. Fifty, eighth graders were chosen through a lottery system and will attend one class at SFA in each the fall and spring semesters as NHS ninth graders.
Through ECHS, student are “Actively involved in community service as well as various events at the college including sports and fine arts,” said NISD college and career coordinator Keri Launius.
A grant through the Texas Guarantee Fund helps fund books, tuition, teacher professional development and enrichment trips for the students. While in high school, ECHS participants can earn as many as 60 college hours.
NISD is one of two school districts in State of Texas that has worked exclusively with a four-year university, she said.
“ECHS has been a great partnership with SFA that will only grow,” Launius said. “We are excited to watch this program expand by nearly doubling the number of students taking part.”
Etech Global Services has donated SFA t-shirts to boost the ECHS students’ school spirit.
