Tyler , TX (KETK) — More than 50 years ago the Mineola Fire Department hosted its first rodeo, and today, its still going strong. "You can't grow up in Mineola and not go to the rodeo," said Mercy Rushing, Economic Development Director for the City of Mineola. Thousands of east Texans go every year to enjoy bull riding, roping, and good food. Mineola Fire Chief David Madsen said, "its more of a tradition now than anything, we still enjoy doing it, and we still make money on it." However, it was originally to keep what was once a volunteer department in business. "At that point in time it was strictly a volunteer fire department, and people were just scratching for money and just trying to do with what they could get," said Madsen.
Now it helps fund training and equipment for the firefighters, and its has become more of a family event than anything. Madsen said, "I think if we ever stopped, there would be a lot of disappointed people in Mineola, you know, we're going to keep it going as long as we can." Rushing agreed and said, "all of Wood County really supports it because they know all of the funds are going back into the community." She said she takes her family every year in support of the fire department and city as a whole. "Its kind of a one of those main event every year that we look forward to," said Rushing. Madsen said, "I think that the fact that we're the only fire department around, that I know, that puts on a rodeo, kind of makes it special.
