More than 85 dogs in pens have been rescued after their owner was found dead in his North Texas mobile home during the excessive heat.

Montague (mahn-TAYG') County Sheriff Paul Cunningham says the body of 73-year-old Jack Dempsey Beasley was discovered Wednesday at a residence near Stoneburg. Concerned relatives had contacted the sheriff's department to check on Beasley.

A coroner listed the preliminary cause of death as heat exhaustion. Authorities believe the man had been dead for a couple of days.

Members of the Humane Society of North Texas helped rescue the dogs Thursday. The animals will be available for adoption after they receive medical attention. Dozens of other dogs were found dead.

The National Weather Service says temperatures in North Texas topped 100 degrees this week.
