BEN WHEELER, TEXAS (KETK) — The revival of Ben Wheeler has created an economic boom for its downtown shops, and with Mother's Day right around the corner, East Texans have been flocking to one boutique in particular, that offers special gifts crafted with a personal touch.
As you make your way downtown , you'll instantly notice the turquoise door. On the other side, lies a shop full of handmade crafts, vintage gifts, embroidered linens, and art. It's called the Secret Garden.
"Someone said you know there's this fellow you need to meet. He's building this town, and we can't explain why we think you should go meet him but we think you should," said Marsha Taylor, owner of the shop.
Taylor says when she met Brooks Gremmels, he told her he wanted something fresh for downtown.
That's the feeling you get when you walk through the door. You instantly smell the aroma of handmade soap and are quickly taken in by an array of unique clothing, handmade jewelry and customized gifts.
"I fit a niche. We have one of the best decoy guys in the country, one of the best knife smiths in the country, we needed a girly-girly store," said Taylor.
Five years later, her store has been a gift to many.
"My store is a labor of love. I'm a embroidery artist. I've designed an embroidered lines that are sold in stores all over the country," said Taylor.
Her work has been featured in national magazines; Southern Living, Cottage Style and Country Home.
"Most of the things in my store are either other artists that I went to art school with in Colorado or other artist that I've met along life's journey," explained Taylor.
Every corner tells a different story, and changes with the seasons.
Randy Martina and his wife own the Flying Fish Gallery next door. It was the first shop in town. He calls it "The Boardwalk."
"Marsha with the Secret Garden brings a nice softness and elegance and it smells good, my stuff doesn't smell good, hahaha," said Randy Martin.
