Texans invited to lend a hand at cleaning the sand.

Austin---

An upcoming day at the beach in Texas means more than just enjoying the sand and surf.

The Texas General Land Office has announced that its Adopt-A-Beach Fall Cleanup will be held Saturday, Sept. 25th.

Agency officials say volunteers, who can register online, are invited to 28 sites along the Texas coast for the cleanup. Trash bags and gloves will be provided.

The Texas Adopt-A-Beach program started in the fall of 1986 when 2,800 volunteers picked up about 124 tons of trash.

The Land Office says, since then, more than 397,000 volunteers have removed 7,700 tons of trash from the state's beaches.
