African American veterans honored in Tyler

Sunday, January 19, 2014 - 10:58pm

At three o' clock Sunday afternoon, East Texans gathered at North Star Missionary Baptist Church, to honor local African American veterans, who served during the 1970s.

The event was organized by Dr. Rodney Atkins, who wrote a book about the black soldiers.

The day's speaker was Retired Major General James L. Williams, who wanted to thank the men and women in attendance for their service.

Doctor Atkins plans to hold this event every year from now on, with each ceremony recognizing a different decade of black soldiers.
