At three o' clock Sunday afternoon, East Texans gathered at Greater Saint Mary Baptist Church, to honor local african american veterans, who served during the 1940's and 50's.

The event was organized by Dr. Rodney Atkins, who wrote a book about the black soldiers, and Dr. M.K. Mast, pastor at St. Mary.

The day's speaker was Timothy Hancock, mayor of Killeen and a military veteran, who wanted to thank the men in attendance for opening a way for him to serve his country.

Doctors Atkins and Mast plan to hold this event every year from now on, with each ceremony recognizing a different decade of black soldiers.
