Airports Fail to Comply with FAA

June 9, 2009 - 7:54am

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Tuesday, the National Transportation Safety Board holds public hearings on the so-called "miracle" on the Hudson.

This comes after U.S. Airways pilot, Captain Chesley Sullenberger landed his aircraft in January, on the hudson river after a flock of geese disabled both engines on takeoff from JFK airport.

The board will begin three days of public hearings as part of its investigation into the accident and bird strikes will be the focus of the meetings. In April, the Federal Aviation Administration made public bird strike data public, reporting almost 8,000 commercial collisions with birds in the past year. Since then, the FAA has ordered airports to take action in order to prevent similar accidents. However, the FAA reports that more than 150 airports have failed to comply.

NBC's Chris Clackum reports.
