Smith County--The largest precinct in Smith County may soon allow alcohol sales if there is an election.  Part of that precinct, the city of Winona, can already buy beer and wine in stores.

The precinct now has petitions to give voters a local beverage option on the November ballot.  The petitions must be signed by 1,509 registered voters.  The option would allow for alcohol to be sold in stores and buyers to bring it home.

The precinct passed a proposal in May 2009 to sell mixed beverages in restaurants.  Off-premise alcohol was also an option in that same election, but it did not pass when less than 53% voted against it.

Judge Mitch Shamburger thinks the same people who opposed it and pushed for it last year will do the same this year.

A resident we talked to is voting for a wet county if there is an option.  He says, "All our income is going to other counties, why not keep it in our own?"

The signatures for the petitions have to be filed by July 26th.

Last time I checked Tyler is plum full of places people drive to and from that sell alcohol already. Ya know! I think their called bars? So why not allow those who don't drink and drive to buy beer or wine to take home before consuming?

There was this one time when me and my dog and my buddy roy went on out huntin in the bottoms. Ya'll know the place. There I was on my deer stand with my ot six and a whole cooler a bush light(watchin my kalories). I was sitin back relaxing thinkin about this ol girl mary beth and tryin to figure out why she was gettin so moody latley. roy said its on the count of shes a little long a tooth. I was in such deep thought that I fell off my deer stand! I was in a wet county when this happened.

From the disastrous Volstead Act (Prohibition), which brought us Al Capone and nothing positive, right up until now, where draconian laws pushed by those who would seek to control others prevent the sale of alcohol, there exists not one shred of evidence that supports meddling with free commerce. Let's hope Smith County finally awakens from decades of rural thinking.

the people who have kept this the wettest try communty have robbed all of us for decades by forcing our money to be spent in the surrounding communities and they havent benefited from the money either its wrong to keep us under high property and sales taxes to start with but this is a crime against the whole county billions of dollars wasted years wasted shame on all of us!

What people do with their own bodies in their own homes is their own business--I hope Liberty wins out on this one.

TRUE BUT WHAT DUMB PEOPLE DO WHEN THEY DRINK LIKE AN IDIOT,ACT LIKE AN IDIOT AND DRIVE LIKE AN IDIOT ALL OF A SUDDEN BECOMES EVERYONE'S BUSINESS...WHEN THEY RUN YOU OFF THE ROAD IT IS NOT JUST THEIR BUSINESS IT IS EVERYONE'S...IF WHAT THEY DID IN THEIR OWN HOME STAYED IN THEIR OWN HOME,THEN NO HARM IS DONE.THIS NEW AGE B.S. WAY OF THINKING THAT IT IS OLD FASHIONED TO THINK THAT MORONS CAN'T DRINK AND DRIVE AND KILL SOMEONE BEHIND THE WHEEL AND IT IS OK,IS TOTALLY STUPID.CALL IT WHAT THEY WANT...

How soon we lower our values when it comes to a dollar. You better think further than your pocketbook when it comes to this issue. Be careful what you wish for.
