Alcohol vote, hospital growth top area stories
Longview — In stark contrast to results of the same effort in 2007, Longview voters in May overwhelmingly backed a measure to expand beer and wine sales across the city — approving by a margin of almost two to one.
The expansion of alcohol sales and resulting development was selected by News-Journal editors as the top area story of 2013. It was followed by millions of dollars in expansions under way at Longview’s two hospitals, and a November stabbing spree at a hospital annex that killed two and left others injured.
