There’s friction between the mayor of Alto and the City Council.
And the majority want him to go.
Mayor Monty Collins of Alto is under fire.
And the reasons are a little vague.
But for him, the real cause is very clear.
Alto is a small town of around 1200 in southern Cherokee County.
It hs endured the firing of the entire police department and the hiring of a smaller one 6 months later.
And now, the Mayor is is the target.
Monty collins is a retired railroad engineer. He was elected Mayor by a 2 to 1 margin in the last election. He sayd the problems with the council are mainly ones of personality. So he drove to town, parked his truck under a tree and talked to us about it.
Collins was a little surprised at the last council meeting when a new agenda item was added at the last minute. An item calling for a vote to fire him.
Collins also wrote a tough editorial in the local paper about the town and what he percieves as a lack of civic pride.
Collins says the majority on the council want a new mayor, but the city Attorney says, they’ll have to wait.
But Monty may save everyone the trouble.
Monty admits he weighing whether it is worth it to live with the aggravation for another year, or hang it up.
He says he make that decision soon.

Mayor Monty Collins came under fire for his Feb. 15th editorial on the lack of "pride and effort" in Alto, a former 2A High School, now less than 1A. They blame him for the outsiders reporting their bad news. They are afraid of what will be discovered and their little bubbles burst. They epitomize small town paranoia. Collins is not the first Alto, TX mayor to be drummed out of office for simply telling it like it is. If he didn't leave quitely, they'd trump up charges on him.
