The economic downturn has put a lot of pressure on everyone, and that includes government at every level.

The city of Alto in Cherokee County took an unprecedented step and now, they want to reverse it.

This time one year ago, the police department of the city of Alto consisted of a Chief and five officers. Now, they have all been fired.

And the way it was handled, still rankles.

Last summer Alto was facing the same problems many others have faced in this tough economy. Money was tight and they had to cut somewhere. But they did something unheard of…they cut their entire police department.

Now, they want to begin again, but the former Chief has his doubts.

Chief Charles Barron sat down with us today and said he worries that they want protection on the cheap. And Alto has been down that road before.
