Americans Under Pressure

February 6, 2009 - 6:54pm

EAST TEXAS-The U.S. Labor Department released a new report Friday. According to that report, unemployment rose to 7.6%.

This new number means almost 11 million Americans are now out of work, including thousands of East Texans. Just a few months ago many economists thought the East Texas economy was strong enough to weather the storm, but now it looks like we may be struggling to stay afloat.

According to a report released Friday by the Tyler Economic Development Council, from January 2008 to December 2008, nationally almost 3 million people lost their jobs. But back here in Texas, there was actually 31,000 new jobs created with 1,000 of those in Smith County.

The report also states as of last month, the unemployment rate seems to be climbing. Right now the unemployment rate in Smith County is 5.6%, according to the report.

But some members of the Tyler Economic Development Council are confident the Texas job climate will remain fairly stable. "We have a competitive business climate and a pro-growth attitude in Texas," President of the Development Council, Tom Mullins, said. "People support incentives to get companies to relocate here, so there are things going for Texas that many not be going for other parts of the country."
