Angelina Co. expected to reduce number of precincts today
Lufkin, Texas — The Angelina County Commissioners Court is expected to consider formally adopting a plan today that would the number of justice of the peace and constable precincts from five to four.
The proposed plan would consolidate Precinct 4, which includes Zavalla and the southern portion of the county, with Precinct 3, which includes Huntington.
The proposed changes would not immediately come into effect for at least three years, county officials said, as Pct. 4 Justice of the Peace Claude Marshall Jr. is in the first year of a four-year term.
State statute provides that counties with the population of Angelina maintain a minimum of four precincts.
County officials have said that they intend to maintain a tax office and continue to offer automobile registration services in the affected part of the county.
According to officials, the reduction would save the county about $140,000 a year.
Also on the agenda of the commissioners’ 10 a.m. meeting is a public hearing on the county’s proposed fiscal 2012 budget and tax rate.
