Lufkin ,Tx — “Lord Jesus, help me! I didn’t mean to kill Fred!” convicted killer Rodney Shepherd sobbed after being found guilty of murder Wednesday morning by an Angelina County jury.
The jury spent less than two hours in the deliberation room before deciding Shepherd, 44, stabbed Frederic Gilmore, 58, in cold blood March 6 at 908 Rowe Ave. Gilmore was the cousin of Shepherd's wife of 20 years.
While the sentencing phase was set to begin immediately, it was delayed when Shepherd collapsed in a hysterical fit.
After state District Judge Paul White cleared the courtroom, Shepherd’s mother was allowed back inside to comfort her screaming son. He could be heard repeating, “Momma, I didn’t mean to. Momma!” Shepherd was seen hugging his mother just before sliding off a rolling chair onto the courtroom floor.
