If You Lose Your Dog, Where Do You look?
October 5, 2009 - 5:36pm
SMITH COUNTY - Since Smith County and the Humane Society went their separate ways in 2007, there is a process you need to know about in case your pet goes missing.
If your dog goes missing, you must first call Smith County Dispatch. Ask to speak to an animal control officer, and describe your missing dog. Animal Control will get back to you if your dog is at the shelter.
It only takes 72 hours before a dog is put down, sometimes a little longer, so you must act quickly.
To reach Smith County Dispatch, call 903-566-6600.

It's very sad that there are so many stray animals PERIOD! Pet owners should be able to afford to "fix" their animals & some just can't! Then there are people who can afford it and they just don't care to get it done! Animals shouldn't suffer becuz of human neglect. Man's best friend cannot speak! Therefore we MUST speak for man's best friend or he dies. I completely agree that the NEED here is for the Commissioners Court to fund a shelter and an animal control program properly. And until the citizens of Smith County realize the need for a well funded program with a proper sheltering facility, adoptable animals including YOUR FAMILY PET who gets loose - will probably die!

1 month agoI am appalled by the naivety on this subject. "I'm sure if a request was made for volunteers"? How blind! This is not a small number of animals, and the Humane Society is not a shining example of an animal shelter. The problem is not the numbers of dogs or the FACT of euthanasia in the dog catching business. The issue is that the Commissioners Court refuses to fund a shelter and animal control program properly. Until the citizens of Smith County wake up to the need for a well funded program with a proper sheltering facility the tragedy of too many salvagable and adoptable animals being euthanised will continue.

1 month agoBill IS a kind man. I met him a few times and he is wonderful with the animals. The problem is not with the animal control officers. It's definitely with the system that is in place AND that lack of responsibility on the part of people who refuse to "fix" their animals so that the overpopulation problem is stopped! WE ALL need to be responsible with our pets! They are part of our family and should be treated as such!

1 month agoMy neighbor's dog was picked up last year. Because the people at the shelter had NO IDEA what animals had been brought in, her dog died. She did everything she was supposed to, ie, call see if her dog was there etc. The worst part of it was that her little dog died out in the heat because SOMEONE did not know that the animal was actually there. I dont believe that the shelter does as much as is needed to help the public find their missing animals. They cant even keep up with the what kind of animals are brought in.

1 month agoThis is the saddest story. Three days and a dog dies because it is a stray. Why can't a real shelter be set up for these dogs, like the humane society. I'm sure if people were allowed to adopt these dogs they would. Why is J.B. Smith so intent upon killing man's best friend? Many people love dogs and I'm sure if a request was made for volunteers to care for them people would. Give these creatures a second chance not a death sentence.

1 month agoThis man is my brother, he has the kindest heart that any man could have. Over many years I have watched him save animals and find them a home. I hope someone listens to him and hears his whole story. God Bless you Bill and what you stand for. I love you, your lil sister, Chris
