Another Tax On Tobacco Products On The Way
July 24, 2009 - 9:31pm
The attention continues to surround President Obama's healthcare bill.
One state tax here at home will be affecting a lot of people soon.
It's House Bill 2154.
It's been a done deal for a while, but if you use any tobacco products other than cigarettes and cigars, the new bill recently signed into law raises those taxes up to almost 18 dollars a pound.
What that means, is September 1st, if you roll your own, chew or dip— you'll be dipping in your wallet deeper-chewing into your budget.
State Senator Robert Nichols from Jacksonville says, he voted for the tax increase because that money would quote, "help relocate physicians to medically under-served areas. It also lowers franchise taxes on small businesses."
Tyler State Rep. Leo Berman voted against the bill saying quote, " I don't vote for new taxes."
If you don't use tobacco you probably don't care.
If you do—this may be hard to swallow.
Again, this all starts September 1st.

I agree why dont they tax ALCOHOL!!!!! Have you ever heard of someone smoking a Newport and then causing a accident from it? HECK NO!!!!!!!! I dont smoke nor do i drink but right is right and fair is fair.

This has got to be ILLEGAL...
Tax the Drinkers, Tax the Obese, Start Taxing Churches...I fear all these taxes on top of taxes will only cause a Revolution...Americans will not take this too much longer...

9 months agoA TAX is A TAX and well it's been said Born Free Taxed to Death !!!
Well lets put a tax on other things besides tobacco, bathroom tissue would be a good place to start. Then everyone woul help not just the smokers or people that use tobacco products. Come on Reps and Senators of Texas, what happened to all of the money you guys have collected for all the other taxes and fees from the state.
On the other hand I think it's time for term limits on the senators and reps for the state. They get into office and forget where they came from. It's time to remind them we elected them and they can be replaced if they don't do what they are elected to do !!!!!!
Sincerely A TOBACCO USER
