LAKEPORT, TX — Scott Brown woke up in the middle of the afternoon on Christmas Eve in his wrecked vehicle and didn’t know about the lifesaving ride he was about to take.
The heavy equipment operator, fresh from a haircut and last-second toy shopping, also didn’t know he’d just been impaled by a 10-foot metal fence top rail about two inches in diameter.
“It went in here, and it came out my back,” Brown said, describing the wound. He didn’t realize his good fortune in being in Lakeport — and in 2012 — at the time of his wreck. He just knew that help had arrived.
“When I looked up, I could see I had some bones sticking up out of my ribs,” Brown, 41, said Tuesday at the Elderville-Lakeport VFD, where he greeted Champion EMS Paramedic Field Supervisor Donnie Reynolds and most of the team who saved his life six weeks earlier.
