Since the tragic school shootings in Connecticut, there’s been a lot of talk about solutions.
Some have recommended letting teachers with concealed carry licenses bring their guns to school.
But is that wise?
While much of the talk these days is about gun control, the issue of arming school employees has also been suggested.
And among Texas leaders, that conversation is growing.
Michael Williams is the Texas Commissioner of Education, and he told the Texas Tribune he basically agrees with arming teachers who already have concealed handgun carry permits.
But is that enough?
Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst told KERA in Dallas that he thinks it isn’t and more traininig is needed.
Mack Woods of the Shootist gun shop is a former law enforcement officer and teaches the concealed carry course.
He agrees that much more training is needed for an armed teacher to be effective.
He has seen trained policemen make stupid mistakes when the adrenalin is pumping.
While everyone wants some answers to these horrible events, Dewhurst wants the state to pony up the money for the training.
In this legislative session, he’ll have to get in line.
