A 12-year-old boy died in an early morning crash Tuesday when a vehicle drove off an Angelina County road and into a river.

According to Justice of the Peace Precinct 4 Judge Esther Barger, at around 2:30 a.m., the vehicle fell into the Neches River off Highway 59, a few miles south of Diboll. Two passengers were able to escape the car, but a third person, Chance Patterson, of Santa Fe, Texas, could not and drowned.

The two able to get out of the vehicle were taken to a Lufkin hospital for treatment. They were identified by troopers as the father and 14-year-old sister of Patterson. The girl was able to pull her dad safely from the vehicle, said officials.

The father and sister are believed to be in good condition, said Barger.

A tow truck pulled the car from the river and traffic is flowing normally.
