UNDATED - Recent studies show the number of children diagnosed with autism is on the rise. Leanne Gregg offers some alarming facts.
One in every 91 newborn children are diagnosed with a form of autism. Previous studies found autism to be only one in every 150 children.
Awareness of the disorder is partly the cause of the increase, but that was expected. The study also found 40% of children who met the criteria of autism, were later found to not meet the criteria.
However, there are skeptics of the recent spike in autism cases. Doctors say the study was conducted with verbal parent reports and in turn, could alter the accuracy.
