EAST TEXAS - Tony Spraggins, like many auto shop owners, have had a tough time looking for a qualified technician.
He said, "Sometimes our job is not the easiest to do, so I believe fewer people are getting into the field."
Because good help is hard to come by in the auto industry, Kilgore College has a growing program to produce more qualified help.
This automotive program started about ten years ago with only 16 students and today has grown to 53 students.
This program teaches students everything from the basics to specifics.
D'Wayne Shaw is the director of the program and he said, "It goes bumper to bumper, on the auto tech side...engine repair, heating and air conditioning, breaks and steering suspension."
This is Joseph Padron's second year in the program and he said, "You do book work and you also do hands on so you get both experiences...I'd recommend it to other folks who want to start a career in the auto business."
Spraggins said, the skills that are taught in this program are exactly what auto shops everywhere are looking for.
