Avalanche in Colorado kills 5 people
CNN — Five members of a backcountry snowboarder group were found dead Saturday after they were trapped by an avalanche on a high mountain pass in Colorado's White River National Forest, officials from the Clear Creek County Sheriff's Office told CNN.
One other member was only partially trapped and survived the avalanche at Loveland Pass, which is located about 50 miles west of Denver and has an elevation of 11,990 feet, the officials said.
The survivor dug himself out, managed to move 200 yards and flagged down workers with the Colorado Department of Transportation, Sheriff Don Kruger said.
The snowboarders' names weren't immediately released.
CNN's Pierre Meilhan and Nick Valencia contributed to this report.
