An infant has been recovered safely after a van was stolen from a Gilmer gas station Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Gilmer Police Department, the vehicle was taken at the Texaco store on Highway 271 at around 12:30 p.m.

A woman reported to authorities a white man, later identified as Andrew Lowell Crane, 31, had jumped into her van and taken off with her child in a car seat as she was leaving the business.

The baby was found a short time later unharmed, sitting on the side of Holly Road in the car seat. The van was discovered a few miles away on Lime Tree Road.

The Upshur County Sheriff's Office, Department of Public Safety and Gilmer Police Department received information leading them to a home where Crane was found. He was arrested without incident and charged with aggravated robbery.

The bandit is currently at a local hospital being treated for self-inflicted injuries.

The one-year-old's name has not been released to KETK.
