A bank robber is dead after dragging a hostage out of a Maryland bank.

The dramatic scene unfolded in Takoma Park, not far from Washington, DC Friday morning.

The suspect used the woman as a shield as he walked out, dragging her down the sidewalk.

When he slipped on the snow the hostage took her chance and bolted.

The suspect ran after her, and police opened fire.

A county police officer was also shot and two hostages who were inside the bank needed medical attention.

Their injuried were described as "minor".
