Beef prices surge; ranchers struggle to restock herds

Unfortunately for cattle ranchers, this past year’s drought not only led to selling off cattle but is taking its toll on ranchers trying to restock their herds.
High cattle prices are forcing some ranchers to abandon the business, while others say they will proceed cautiously.
Hershel Tate, an area rancher who sold his entire stock of one bull and 11 cows this past year, was in the crowd Thursday afternoon at the Longview Livestock Commission’s weekly auction.
