The city of Tyler has some big plans in store for our downtown. They want to add apartment complexes, restaurants, shops, and much, much more.

Tyler 1st is a comprehensive plan the city has been designing since 2007. It includes everything from preserving Tyler's historic buildings to creating more walking trails and giving downtown Tyler a more livelier feel.

"Downtowns are the heart of your city, it what makes you unique and you want to make sure you keep that intact," said Tyler City Planner Heather Nick.

They want to transform the area into a "destination downtown."

"In order to make it a vibrant or destination downtown, you do want to see increased housing, you might see some higher densities where you might have retail and restaurants on the bottom floor and apartments above that," said Nick.

Some agree these additions would be great for the city.

"Not so many people go downtown. It's mostly businesses, it would be great to just to go there and have something to eat and people to live there, I think it's great," said Tyler resident Svtlana Alvarez.

Since first implementing the plan, more events are going on at Liberty Hall, a new parking garage is going up and they've added the Gallery Main Street. The Gallery Main Street is the heart of the downtown arts movement.

But, to also keep the historic feel of the area, the clock from the old Tyler courthouse will be replaced on the parking garage.

"Our plan does that, it does support the historic context of our downtown," said Nick.

We will be seeing these changes throughout the next 15 years and with more shops and restaurants means more jobs for East Texans.

"I think that's great for Tyler. I mean if there is more restaurants and more chances for employment that's better for our city," said Tyler resident Michelle Overmeyer.
