Tyler (KETK) — Texas College hired a new football coach Thursday.
Rodney Blackshear will take over the Steers.
He was a two-time all-conference wide reciever for Texas Tech in the last '80s and early '90s.
"I was fortunate to play for coach Spike Dykes at Texas Tech, I coached under Mike Leach and I coached under Art Briles at the U. of H.," Blackshear said. "I have a good foundation to work from."
"I feel like I'm the right fit for the job otherwise they wouldn't have hired me," Blackshear added. "I still have to go out there and prove it."
Tyler Junior College had a breakthrough season last year.
The Apaches went to their first bowl game in a decade and TJC was ranked as high as third nationwide.
Can Tyler do it again this year?
"It's a completely new team especially offensively," TJC coach Danny Palmer said. "There is not a quarterback or a running back who has played a college football game."
"It's going to be a completely new offense, new faces, new people and I'm excited about that," Palmer added. "When you have a new team it creates a little excitement."
Both Tyler Junior College and Texas College will start their new seasons August 30.
