Bikers Remember Fallen Friend

July 25, 2009 - 4:46pm

MAYDELLE - About 50 bikers came out to pay their respects to one fallen biker who lost his life in a fatal accident just outside of Maydelle back in 2006.

Now the group has a message for East Texans.

Though tattoos and leather make for a tough exterior, inside, these bikers are all heart, and they want to remind all East Texans before they hit the road to remember to pay attention and share the road.

Anytime you see a red cross on the side of the road, it represents a biker whose lost their life in an accident, and these motorcyclists say there are way too many.

One off of Highway 84 near Maydelle is in memory of Susie Berry's husband, Johnny.

Susie says she remembers the day well because she was riding on the back of his motorcycle.

Back in April of 2006, Susie and her husband were on their way home from a long day of volunteering.

Just two miles away from their home, a truck moved into their lane.

She said they tried to dodge the truck but ended up side-swiping it.

The accident killed Johnny and injured Susie, leaving her in the hospital for the next three months.

Now, she is back on the bike and continuing Johnny's legacy through "Bikers for Jesus," a group that does a handful of projects to better the community.

Her main mission is to make sure that no one else has to go through what she did.

She said all it takes to prevent this is for people to pay more attention, and look twice, not once before making a move on the road.
