Tyler, TX — Just when local cyclists thought they had a deal on Loop 49, the state of Texas steps in.
But it may not interfere with our area riders.
Local cyclists reached an agreement with the local Regional Mobility Authority.
If they raise the money for special striping and signs, they can ride on the Loop 49 toll road.
But then they got a nasty surprise this morning.
On the agenda for today’s meeting of the Texas Department of Transportation board was a proposal to ban all bicycles from state toll roads.
The word went out locally, as the meeting kicked off at 9am.
So, the issue is tabled, but it seems as though many members, including Jeff Austin of Tyler, are leaning toward saying no to bikes.
But then they clarified that it only applies to roads controlled by TxDOT. Not roads like Loop 49.
so, the state assures everyone that this will not affect local roads like ours. But local cyclists don’t find that very reassuring.
Meanwhile, they are within a few dollars of their fundraising goal.
So, for now, local cyclists are close to their goal of riding on the loop.
But now they will be looking over their shoulder…not at passing cars, but at TXDOT.
