Blackberry's playbook

Tuesday, September 28, 2010 - 5:15pm

There's a new player in the growing tablet PC market.

The makers of Blackberry smart phones rolled out what they hope will be a game changer on Monday, the Blackberry Playbook.

Already dominant in corporate circles, Blackberry hopes its new device, smaller and lighter than an iPad, will become a favorite in the both the business and consumer markets.

"It's got cameras on the front and back, which is something the iPad doesn't have," notes CNBC Tech Correspondent Jon Fortt. "It's also got flash, which is something that apple's been criticized for deciding not to build in."

The Playbook also handles full 1080 High Definition video and can be paired with a Blackberry smart phone using a Bluetooth connection to view content on the larger display.

The play book is the latest in what's expected to be a wave of tablet computers to compete with the iPad.

The cost of the Playbook has not been released but it's expected to be around $500.

Amazon is planning on releasing the Kindle application for the tablet device.
