Body of woman found in May 2013 car fire identified

The body of a woman in a car fire in May of 2013 has been identified.

On May 23, 2013 just after 6:00 a.m., firefighters were called to a burning vehicle on County Road 3101 near the Jackson Heights area in Smith County.

At the scene, they found a car that was burning, but the majority of the blaze had been extinguished.

Smith County Sheriff's Deputies also responded to the scene and after a close inspection they found the remains of a person inside the vheicle.

At the time, it could not be determined whether the person was a man or a woman. The body was sent to Dallas for an autopsy and identification.

DNA testing has found that the person in the vheicle was Janet Bagwell McVickers, 62, of Dumas, Texas.

An in-depth investigatin found that she died as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

No foul play is suspected. The firearm was recovered in the debris close to the victim.
